My family loves visiting the Domincan Republic. We’ve been three time and this past trip has been our favorite – probably because we did so much. We stayed at the brand new Nickelodeon Resort which is an incredible new all-inclusive luxury resort on the beach in Punta Cana. On the third day of our trip we decided to go on a 1/2 day excursion to swim with dolphins! We booked our excursion through Dolphin Island. They offer a Family Experience, Dolphin Action and the Dolphin Royal Swim. We picked the Action package described as: ‘For those who want to have a first hand experience with our dolphins: you’ll meet them in our platform, where they will greet you and you’ll enjoy their acrobatics, applause and courtesies, before getting an exciting dorsal fin tow in the sea!’

Their open air shuttle bus picked us up in front of our lobby and drove us about 20 minutes from our resort. Once we arrived we checked in and were provided free lockers. We changed and were instructed to put on waist life preservers which they provided and we boarded a boat that took us out to sea to a series of containment pools where the dolphins live.

Once we arrived we all stepped into specified pools and onto a ledge inside the pool. Our dolphin, Luna, swam by several times allowing us to pet her. She also clapped her hands and performed for us. When we waved our hands like music directors she sang and clapped, splashing us and making our 5 year old a dolphin. The highlight was when we individually swam midway into the pool and Luna swam up to us, gave kisses then allowed us to hold onto her fins and she swam each of us back to the platform ledge. Our five year old got shy and was too timid to swim out on her own so her dad swam out with her and they did that part together which was really cute to watch.

After interacting with the dolphins my boyfriend and I went into another containment pool and snorkeled for a few minutes with sharks and manta rays. To be honest I was freaked out! I only saw one shark because visibility was poor, but it was enough for me. I happily hopped out of the pool and joined my daughter. Once the group was done snorkeling we took the boat back to shore (about a 10 minute ride) where you could buy photo packages and hang out on the beach while waiting for the bus ride back to your hotel. I’ve done dolphin experiences before but this one provided way more interaction than others. The dolphins also seemed well cared for and very bonded with their trainers.
