Hip Hop Nutcracker – Palace Theatre NYC
NYC with kids December 4, 2016 esteepouleris 0

This was such a fun family experience for my boyfriend and our 5 year old daughter. I used to dance classical ballet and performed in the Nutcracker countless times…and as much as I hate to admit it…I think it’s boring. Well, welcome Hip Hop Nutcracker! There’s nothing boring about this energetic, interactive, urban story which brings Tschaikovsky’s iconic score to a fun new level.
First of all we happened to watch this show in the landmark Palace Theatre in Washington Heights. This historic venue attained legendary status among vaudville performers in the 1920’s. In the 1930’s it was converted into a cinema, during the 40’s it served as both and now it functions as church, live music venue, and non-profit cultural center. It’s a true gem and worthy of a visit just to take a peek at the lobby.
My 5 ear old is a bit hyper, so the idea of sitting thru a show had me a little concerned, but this happened to be a great intro for her into theatre. They began the show with a little history of Hip Hop which felt more like a dance party and brought the crowd to their feet dancing with their arms in the air. Things finally settled down, and my daughter settled into her seat and the show began.
It was a magical mix of Tschaikovsky’s score mixed with urban touches and set to images of Washington Heights projected as the background. Vibrant dancers kept audiences glued to the stage watching them dance and spin like they run on batteries! We were in awe and really really enjoyed this show!
Here’s a taste of what to expect:
