We had a unexpected encounter with butterflies while running errands after gymnastics yesterday. NYC Butterfly is a traveling butterfly exhibit which tours the tri-state area. The one we visited was a pop up tent in Paramus Park Mall.
For $5/person we were each given a q-tip dipped with sugary water on one end and allowed to enter a big tent with free flying butterflies. The butterflies are attracted to the nectar-like substance and will land on the end of your q-tip. We met some particularly friendly ones who crawled onto our hands, one even hung out in my hair for a bit. It was really cool getting up close and personal with these gorgeous creatures. I love butterfly conservatories but have never been able to interact with the creatures like we did today.
Handling these wonderfully elegant butterflies was a really sweet experience. Teaching my daughter not to be afraid of insects (at least not butterflies), how to treat them with respect and admire their beauty was a great opportunity. On the drive home she even declared she is considering a career in live butterfly feeding 🙂 I resisted from buying a butterfly kit which you could purchase for an additional fee. As much as I would love to see the metamorphosis at home, we have yet to have success past the chrysalis phase. Soon enough I’ll be bringing home caterpillars from our spring planned camping trips.
NYC Butterfly will be at Paramus Park Mall through May 31st.
Check out their website for other locations, butterfly party packages, exhibit rental and butterfly releases.
If you find yourself at Paramus Mall, be sure to rent one of these giant motorized stuffed animals located right near the butterfly tent. You can ride on them and drive through the mall for $7.00. You’re guaranteed lots of laughs from yourself and passerbys as you take a scoot past folks while on a Rhino.
