Looking for some fun art for your walls? We had a great experience at Jackson Pollock’s old farm house in East Hampton and made some of our own at a drip art workshop on the grounds. The old farm house he once shared with Lee Krasner offers tours, including an old barn converted into an art studio. Afterwards, if you register in advance, you can make your own drip art inspired painting on the lawn.

The farm house, built in 1879 is a nice look back into history.  It still holds many of Pollock and Krasner’s possessions and furniture that have been preserved and are on display, providing a peek into their lives. I loved this part, having just re-watched the movie Pollock the night before all of this was fascinating to me. My favorite part of the tour was the barn/art studio where you could see splashes and drippings left behind from Pollock’s original paintings. The designs on the floor were enough to inspire our daughter for her drip art painting session, which followed right after on the lawn.

Artist and writer, Joyce Raimondo, leads this fun family workshop. She provides a canvas, Popsicle sticks and paint for kids (and parents) to create their own drip painting. We tried many techniques and had fun with splashes and drizzles, putting so much color on our canvas we covered almost the whole thing and it looks pretty awesome!

We brought a smock for our daughter who was so excited and into the drip art techniques she managed to get pain in her hair, fortunately it washes off easily. The painting workshop takes about 30 minutes. I noticed our family took a bit longer than others who came with younger kids, so I think this is a great activity for ages 5+.  This was a really special and fun family activity and now we have our very own Jackson Pollock-inspired drip painting hanging in our home.

Tips:

  • Bring your own smock, they are not provided.
  • Register for this event in advance.
  • Be prepared to leave with a wet painting, so have an area in your car for this to sit flat.
  • This fun experience is $35 per person includes all supplies, museum admission and a tour geared to families before the museum is open to the public. You can also arrange a private lessons or private museum tours.
  • The workshop is offered seasonally every year.
