Coney Island isn’t just for summers! We made a visit the first weekend of Fall and had an awesome time hanging on the boardwalk and riding every ride in the kiddie section of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park with my family and friends!

Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park is a family-owned amusement park situated right along the boardwalk in Coney Island, next to Nathan’s. It features 16 kiddie rides, about a dozen family rides and 5 adult rides. Ticketing is a little tricky, we went with 3 little kids so purchased kid stamp tickets (where they hole punch per ride). After about an hour on the main level, we went down the ramp for a bathroom break and to see the family rides. Down here we were advised this type of ticket is not valid and you need the family and adult tickets to access these. So, we went back up the ramp and the kids continued to have a blast on the fairly large selection of rides just their size.

Their main attraction is the Wonder Wheel. This is a large, hundred and fifty foot Ferris Wheel built in 1920. It’s gondolas don’t just suspend and ride the loop with the wheel, they run down a short track inside of the wheel swinging in and out, making a much more thrilling experience. Not all the gondolas have the track so be sure to ask for one if you want this extra dose of thrill.

The boardwalk and park overlook  Coney Island beach. After spinning ourselves silly, filling up on pizza and hotdogs and dancing along the boardwalk to a the live band, we hit the beach to enjoy the sunset. It was a gorgeous night and lovely way to spend a Fall Saturday!

Tips:

  • There are multiple Amusement Parks along the Coney Island Boardwalk and tickets are not valid at different parks. Pick your park carefully depending on your party.
  • Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park is a great park for small kids.
  • Luna Park is great for teens and adults looking for bigger thrill rides. They also have a kiddie section which is separate from their larger rides.
  • All of these parks allow you to walk through them without tickets, so you can browse the rides in each before deciding which one is best for you.
  • All amusement parks are stroller friendly, with bathroom.
  • There are many dining options.
  • Check the schedule online before heading out, off season many amusement parks are only open weekends, and often closed completely.
