Washington Square Park, in the heart of Greenwich Village is one of my favorite parks in NYC and also made our best playgrounds list. Yesterday we had a guest in town and wanted to do something very NYC, but we were in the middle of a heatwave so being outside was swampy. We ended up here to play in the fountain, and wound up having a really nice afternoon.

The park has a couple shaded playgrounds including our favorite, Mounds. My boyfriend and daughter played around on the ropes. I’m always grateful to escape without going straight to ER. This area consists of artificial turf mounds with a spider-web-like ropes course above it. It also has traditional monkey bars and other interesting climbing structures.

We spent most of our time playing in the giant fountain in the center of the park. I loved watching kids in their swim suits prepared to get wet, but also the tourists and locals who couldn’t bear the heat any longer so took a walk through it fully clothed.

There is always great street entertainment here too. Yesterday we watched a sand artist prepare a gorgeous piece of art by the Arch for a man who was going to propose later in the day. (You can see the sand art in the video). We also enjoyed watching the painted human statue standing on a pedestal in the middle of the fountain. We also were lucky enough to catch the piano player who somehow manages to leave a full sized grand piano in the park and returns to play it most days. And there are always hustlers ready to bet you in a game of Chess

Tips:

  • Washington Square Park is the heart of Greenwich Village – 4th St. to Waverly Pl. and Macdougal St. to University Pl.
  • Take the A/C/E, B/D/F trains to West 4th/Washington Square, the N/R to 8th Street or the Q to Union Square, or the 4/5/6 to Union Square or the 6 to Astor Place.
  • Citibike stations are located at the Northwest corner of the park, along the eastern edge of the park, and on the south side on Thompson Street at West 3rd.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the fountain but there are two dog parks, separated by dog size.
  • There are clean public bathrooms on site.
  • There are many food/snack vendors on site.
