Brooklyn, my 4 year old with a sword…not such a good idea. Brooklyn practicing lightsaber fitness…bullseye!

We were recently invited to attend a class at Sword Class NYC called Lightsaber Fitness for Kids. It’s designed for youth ages 5-12. She and her buddy, Pax, were pretty thrilled to learn some techniques using lightsabers! And they did! Prior to going I humored myself envisioning the kids doing jazzersize with glow sticks. In reality, I was really impressed when I saw it was a very controlled martial arts practice that the kids took to surprisingly well. The class was 40 minutes and they learned a combination of techniques from kendo and longsword and of course some moves inspired from movies using lightsabers! This was not a lighsaber fighting class. The kids were taught how to handle the ‘sword’, how to advance, strike and block. There were also a series of drills which got them moving.

The instructor, Raab Rashi has mastered many different types of martial arts and he works really well with kids, commanding respect and focus, yet not intimidating them. If you’re interested in trying a class, there is currently a $10 promotion for your first one.

Sword Class NYC is not just for kids, they offer a huge range of classes including: Armed Combat League, Siljun Dobup, Kendo and Historical European Martial Arts. To top this whole fun experience off, we picked up a brochure at the training facility which recommends which type of class you should take based on which movies you like. It’s simply great. I hope this business does really well.
