WOW. I still can’t believe I did this.

This week my four year old daughter and I conquered the ropes climbing course, Palisades Climb Adventure. We were suspended 85 feet in the air and navigated a dozen or more obstacles while harnessed and tethered to a secure metal structure. I’m still bursting with some form of an emotional ‘high’ from accomplishing something I was so petrified of. And of course filled with pride because my daughter is so awesome and brave.

This ropes course is located in the middle of the Palisades Mall, about 30 minutes north of NYC. While climbing you’re surrounded by people walking around shopping…and gawking at teetering participants on tight ropes and planks. Its a very surreal experience but SO fun.

My anxiety and fear probably peaked while we were harnessed and waiting for our turn to leave the comfort of the mall floor and step onto the climbing structure. Once we stepped on the structure I immediately felt better…for a little while at least. We were securely strapped into a seat and chest harness and connected to a cable that you guide along a track as you navigate through the course. This track is extremely secure and you can’t get the device out of the track, so there is really no risk of you falling off this thing. In addition the metal platforms and stairs connecting all four levels provide many opportunities to take a deep breath as you strategize your next obstacle.

The course has varying obstacles and difficulty levels. You really navigate your own path along the track, picking which turns you want to take all along the way. You can do all of the challenges or just portions. In total there are 75 different challenges including: a tremor bridge, tension traverse, a cargo net, a two line rope bridge, a vertical rope ladder, an alternating spaghetti hand line and a three line lumber rope bridge.

My daughter was definitely challenged on many of the obstacles especially the tight ropes, but she was so brave she wanted to do all of them…therefore I did since she’s under 48″.

We teetered on tight ropes, balance beams, nets and planks while mugging for the camera whenever we spotted her dad who was busy running floor to floor in the mall to keep up with us.

Friendly staff were stationed throughout the course. They were all willing to jump in with encouragement and even held some frightened participants hands and harnesses across some challenges when needed. There was a large age and size range of people on the course. Most all of them were really enjoying themselves.

Tips:

  • You need to wear closed shoes. My daughter and I had regular winter boots on and they were fine.
  • Wear pants or jeans, no skirts or dresses are allowed.
  • All pockets have to be empty and no phones are allowed out on the course.
  • They have free small lockers.
  • There is no place for stroller parking unless someone in your party stays with it.
  • You have to be 42″ to participate in the main climbing course. However there is a smaller course option for kids under 48″. Guardians have to accompany all minors and anyone under 48″.
  • Maximum height is 80″ ( 6’8” ). Maximum weight limit is 300 pounds.
